ABSTRACT

The growth and biochemical responses in Solanum melongena were studied under sulphur dioxide stress. The presently studied crop showed reduced growth and biochemical contents, when the crop was fumigated with various concentrations i.e. 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6 ppm of sulphur dioxide. The observations collected, indicated that the decrease in growth and biochemical aspects was age and dose dependent. The higher doses of sulphur dioxide caused significant reductions in different growth aspects and biochemical contents viz. chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, carotenoids and ascorbic acid in comparison to lower doses.

Key words : Sulphur dioxide stress, growth, biochemical response, biochemical content, significant reductions
