ABSTRACT

Dichloroacetic acid (DCA) is a major disinfection by-product (DBPs). It is formed from organic material during water chlorination. It has been associated with various complications in humans. However there is paucity of literature on its effects on haematological parameters. A study to determine the effects of DCA on some blood parameters in albino rats was carried out. They were fed with oral dose (125mg/kg/ body weight) of DCA solution for 30-days, 60-days, 90-days. Blood samples were collected and analyzed the same day using standard methods. The results revealed significant decrease in the blood glucose level, cholesterol level and haemoglobin level when compared with the control (P<0.05). It has been shown to cause reduction in blood glucose, cholesterol and haemoglobin levels in rats. Change in the haematological parameters observed in rat that correlated to its toxic effect in the paper. So it is imperative that less quantity of DCA must be administered to human bodies.
