ABSTRACT

The influence of various environmental parameters like salinity, temperature, pH and size of the animal with the oxygen consumption of the juveniles of tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon (Fabricius) was studied under laboratory conditions. Salinity ranging from 0 to 5 psu, pH <4; temperature <5 and 40oC were critical as heavy mortality encountered in the juvenile prawns under these conditions. Oxygen consumption was higher in smaller juveniles than the bigger ones where Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) showed a significant correlation (P<0.001). The oxygen consumption was less influenced by salinity (P<0.001) whereas, the temperature played a significant role on the oxygen consumption of P. monodon (P<0.05) in the present study.
