ABSTRACT

Bardhaman town is the headquarters of Bardhaman district (West Bengal). Present work was undertaken to evaluate sound levels at Bardhaman town during different periods of day time. From the study, three sound level category zones could be recognized, viz. high sound level category zone (HSLCZ, sound range: >90 to 90 dB), moderate sound level category zone (MSLCZ, sound range: 89 to 82dB) and low sound level category zone (LSLCZ, sound range: 81 to <81 dB). Unfortunately, it is seen that except Golapbag campus all sites are much more noise polluted than permissible limit (day time sound limit 75 dB) and actually correspond to the industrial zone regarding sound profile as per the Environmental Protection Rules, 1986.

Key words : Noise pollution, sound level category zones.
