ABSTRACT

Andrographis paniculata {family:Acanthaceace} is an important medicinal plant, also known as king of bitter. It is annual, herbal plant having its native to china but now is cultivated in many parts of the world, including Southern Asia and Europe. It is known for its intensely bitter taste, which is due to the presence of compounds called andrographolides, has a long history of use in traditional medicinal plant and is still widely used today to treat a variety of conditions including the common cold, flu, sore throat, bronchitis, and diarrhe. Pharmacological studies have suggested biological activities like antiinflammatory, antipyretic, anti-viral, immunostimulatory, antidiabetic, antimalarial. Several reported medicinal properties of have necessitated the research for a lead componentt which may eventually assist in the development of drugs from this plant. Therefore, and present study was carried out to evaluate the antibacterial and antifungal activities in methanol, ethanol extract of Andrographis paniculata. In the study the methanol and ethanol extracts of plant were tested for their antimicrobial activities against a variety of pathogenic bacterial strains and fungal strains. Results showed that the extracts had varying degrees of antimicrobial activities with the methanol and ethanol extracts. Highest zone of inhibition value was recorded value 14.50mm with strain S. typhi A in winter season in ethanol extract of leaf at 5000μg/ml concentration and ethanol extracts of root showed highest zone of inhibition 14mm at 5000μg/ml against S.typhi B.

Key words : Andrographis paniculata, Antibacterial Antifungal, multidrug resistance
