ABSTRACT
Jwara, the Ayurvedic description of fever, is a prominent disease entity that is defined by high body temperature and concomitant symptoms. Present-day medicine considers fever as a body response towards diseases such as infection and inflammation. Plant-based compounds represent a fruitful path towards the control of fever. This review examines the possibilities of two leading categories of phytochemicals, alkaloids and flavonoids, as possibilities towards the control of Jwara. To summarize the documented pharmacological activities of alkaloids and flavonoids, such as their antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and analgesic activities, and their possible roles in the relief of fever. This review integrates data on the chemical properties of alkaloids and flavonoids and their significance in the control of fever from contemporary as well as traditional Ayurvedic points of view.
